After you qualify
In much the same way that passing the 'L' driving test is the point at which 'real' learning to drive starts, qualifying as an instructor marks the beginning of your journey towards 'driving instruction excellence'.
With an estimated 10,000 hours required to gain real expertise in any subject you will need help and support after you qualify in order to operate a successful and rewarding business. 10,000 hours takes around eight years and that's the kind of experience that the top earners need.
SmartDriving can continue to assist you as your driving instructor career develops with ever developing projects and publications.
The SmartLearners programme, due for complete overhaul in 2010, offers a valuable training, sales and marketing package designed for the single operator (one man/woman business) and small driving schools.
And of course - there is the SmartDriving web site which continues to offer valuable help and advice to all instructors and drivers. SmartDriving members benefit from a weekly news e-mail ensuring that they get ahead and stay ahead.
The Instructor Training company
For those who train with The Instructor Training Company we offer a range of career support which includes classroom courses on business skills, coaching techniques and more.
Our students are not tied in to any specific school on a rigid contract - you can choose to join Reality Driving School or alternatively we can help you to find a position with one of our partner schools.
Many training schools forget you once you have qualified – we believe that this is bad for you and also demonstrated poor business practice on their part.
The Instructor Training Company is operated by driver training professionals who have a sound knowledge of how successful business works - we realise that success is meant to be shared! It is in our interests to build a lifelong working relationship with our clients - but more importantly, we believe that we can add value to your business with the training and expertise that we have gained. Expertise that developed some of the first fully structured instructor training in the UK over 20 years ago...
Continuing development
SmartDriving is also able to offer specific Continuing Professional Development (CPD) courses to help ensure that your tuition offers the best value and to ease any worries you might have about the regular Check-Test or other (future) DSA requirements.
You might even decide to follow the path taken by Tony Byiast (shown on the right) and develop your skills in order to train new instructors yourself. A keen instructor, Tony now enjoys passing on his skills to 'new recruits'.
However your career progresses, be it with learners, taxi training, fleet training, lorry or bus training, SAFED (Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving) training, skip pan or track training or indeed any other area of the business we look forward to helping you on your road to success.
Good luck with your new career ...
