Part-Two
Part-Two is an advanced driving test; you will also have to answer some questions about basic operation of your vehicle (Show Me/Tell Me).
Click here to see a short video.
You can find examples of the 'L' test show/tell questions here.
You are limited to three attempts at this part of the examination.
If you fail three times you have to wait two years from the date that you passed Part-One of the driving instructors exam before you can start over again (you will then have to re-take Part-One).
The skills required
You will need to demonstrate an expert defensive driving approach and display appropriate attitudes and courtesies to other road users.
During the test you will show that you can control the vehicle safely, employ 'eco-friendly driving strategies, follow correct road procedure, recognise and deal with any hazards that are encountered and complete some basic set manoeuvres.
The skills that are tested
You will perform a range of set manoeuvres:
- Emergency stop
- Left and right reverse
- Reverse (parallel) parking
- Turn in the road
- Bay parking (where facilities permit)
The examiner will assess your:
- Handling of the controls
- Use of correct road procedure
- Ability to anticipate and act upon the actions of other road users
- Judgment of speed
- Judgment of distance
- Consideration for other road users
The test lasts approximately one hour - this includes around 50 minutes driving. A fifty-minute drive might not sound very long, but it takes a lot of concentration to maintain
the expert driving standard required.
There is a maximum allowance of six 'minor' errors - an example might be stopping a little too far forwards at a red traffic light either on, or over the solid stop line.
One singe serious (or dangerous) error results in failure. For example failing to come to a complete halt at a Stop line (even if the car is barely moving) is a driving offence and would be treated as a serious mistake.
Better Driving Online
Unfortunately, you can't become an expert driver simply by sitting in front of a computer - but the free SmartDriving Better Driving Online course (referred to earlier), when followed as directed, will minimise the amount of advanced driver training needed in order to pass the test and qualify as a driving instructor (and/or maximise your chances of passing first time).
The programme, which includes full explanations, practical exercises and worksheets, is completely free - you don't even have to join the Member's Area to access it (just click the link above for direct access). Whether or not you go on to become a driving instructor working through the course will save you £££'s in fuel costs, simply by following the eco-driving advice; and if you do go on to become an instructor the course will help to deepen your knowledge and understanding - especially important for the final part of the exam.
