In this section we will consider each separate part of the driving instructors exam.DSA Examination

As you read through this section, remember that to qualify as a Driving Standards Agency Approved Driving Instructor there is only one exam - you MUST pass all three parts in order to qualify.

The examination process

To qualify as an Approved Driving Instructor you have to pass a three-part examination, with each part taken on a separate occasion.

While it is theoretically possible to qualify in as little as three months, this very rarely, if ever happens. Beware of training providers who claim to be able to give you a fast track through the examination process.

You might see courses advertised that say things like 'train to become a driving instructor in 14 days!' While the course might have only fourteen days of actual training - the process take much, much longer - many people up to 18 months or more to Caution, it might take time...qualifiaction. However, with good support and backup and a little hard work on your part, five to nine months is a reasonable expectation.

Remember that driving instructor training adverts are not offering you a job, they are selling training courses. If you ignore this simple fact you run the risk of a lot of wasted time and money.

The process is governed by the availability of exam appointments - the 'three months' scenario would be one where everything went perfectly with the bookings and the candidate passed all parts of the exam first time.

You have two years in which to qualify - typically you might expect a seven to fourteen month timescale depending upon examination waiting lists.

Being able to study full-time will not significantly reduce this period.

A helping hand

helping handBy utilising the resources on the SmartDriving web site (including the Part-One course in the Members' area) you can qualify as quickly as possible, however, the overall time that it takes will be determined by how dedicated you are and the availability of examination appointments.

Whilst considering things further you might want to start the SmartDriving free Better Driving Course - this includes information specifically designed for ADI students.
