Warning!
It's an unfortunate necessity to have to warn people about starting a career in driver training but reference to the Driving Standards agency will show you that for the year 2008/2009 the pass rates were as follows:
- Part-One: Theory/Hazard Perception 51%
- Part-Two: Driving Ability 50%
- Part-Three: Instructional Ability 30%
But the figures above don't give the full story...
The first thing to remember is that you have to pass all three parts of the examination before you are a fully qualified driving instructor. The figures above tell us that 70% fail the third part of the examination - but in reality many people drop out before they even get to the third part of the examination. It's estimated that the real qualification rate could be significantly below 20%. The state of the training side of the industry was highlighted in a special ITV report programme in early 2009. Things still remain the same.
However, the good news is that if you do your homework in choosing a training provider you will not only qualify but your training will provide you with the necessary skills to an enjoyable and rewarding career.
